Frequently asked questions
Everything parents usually ask us before getting started. Don't see your question? Ask us directly — we answer every message.
Do you take insurance?
Yes. We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Priority Health, Cigna, and Anthem. If you have a different plan, contact us — we can discuss private pay rates and provide superbills you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.
What is Gestalt Language Processing (GLP)?
Gestalt Language Processing is a natural way many children learn language: in whole chunks — favorite phrases, movie lines, or songs — instead of single words first. These "scripts" are meaningful communication, not random repetition. Our entire team is trained in the Natural Language Acquisition framework, and we help children move from scripts toward flexible, self-generated language. It is our biggest specialty.
My child repeats phrases from TV shows. Is that bad?
No — it usually means your child is a gestalt language processor, and those scripts are real communication. We help you understand what each script means for your child and how to build from it toward flexible language. Repeating phrases (echolalia) is a stage of language development, not a behavior to stop.
What ages do you work with?
We work with children from toddlerhood through the school years — from early intervention for our littlest communicators to school-age support. If you're unsure whether your child is the right age, just ask.
Where do sessions happen?
Three options: at our clinic in West Bloomfield (5640 W. Maple Rd., Ste 203), virtually over live video, or community-based — we come to your child's home, school, or daycare.
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
Common reasons families reach out: a child who isn't talking yet or has fewer words than peers, speech that's hard to understand, repeating scripts without flexible phrases, frustration when communicating, or a teacher or pediatrician raising a concern. If you're wondering, that's reason enough to ask — contact us and we'll help you figure out whether an evaluation makes sense.
What happens at a speech evaluation?
We spend time playing with and observing your child, talk with you about their history and your concerns, and use a mix of structured and play-based measures. We look at the whole child — not just test scores, which can be biased for many children. You leave with a clear picture of your child's strengths and needs and a recommended plan.
Do you support AAC devices?
Yes. We help families choose an AAC system, set it up, and — most importantly — learn to model language on it at home. AAC does not stop a child from talking; research and our experience show it supports total communication.
Do you treat childhood apraxia of speech (CAS)?
Yes. We provide DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing), a specialized, evidence-based treatment for childhood apraxia of speech that builds accurate motor patterns for clear speech.
Do parents join sessions?
Absolutely — parents are part of the plan. You'll learn what we're working on and how to build language into everyday routines at home. Many of our biggest wins happen between sessions.
Do you offer camps or groups?
Yes — small-group summer camps for children, and an Autism Support Group for parents. Email brooke@sunnyspeechmi.com to join the support group or get camp dates.
