How to Get Speech Therapy Covered by Insurance in Michigan
Figuring out insurance shouldn't be harder than the therapy itself, but for many families it feels that way. Here's a plain-language guide to getting pediatric speech therapy covered in Michigan.
Start here: what Sunny Speech accepts
We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Priority Health, Cigna, and Anthem. If your family has one of these plans, much of the work is already done — contact us and we'll help verify your child's specific benefits.

Five questions to ask your insurance company
Call the member services number on the back of your card and ask:
- "Does my plan cover outpatient speech therapy for my child?" Ask specifically about habilitative services (building skills a child hasn't developed yet) — some plans word coverage around rehabilitative care (regaining lost skills), and the distinction matters for kids.
- "Do I need a physician referral or prior authorization?" Some plans require a pediatrician's referral before they'll pay.
- "How many visits are covered per year?" Plans often cap sessions annually.
- "What is my deductible, copay, or coinsurance for these services?" Coverage doesn't always mean free.
- "Is coverage limited to certain diagnoses?" Ask what documentation they need.
Write down the date, the representative's name, and a reference number for the call. If a claim is ever denied, that record is gold.
If we're not in your network: superbills
For out-of-network families, we provide superbills — detailed receipts with all the codes insurance companies need. You pay our private rate directly, submit the superbill to your plan, and depending on your out-of-network benefits, your insurer reimburses part of the cost. Many PPO plans have real out-of-network coverage; it's worth the phone call to ask. HSA and FSA funds can typically be used for speech therapy as well.
Two more doors worth knowing about in Michigan
- Early On Michigan — the state's early intervention program for children from birth to age three with developmental delays. Evaluation is free and connects families to services regardless of insurance. Getting Early On support and private therapy is not either/or; many of our families do both.
- School services — children can qualify for school-based speech therapy through an IEP at no cost. School therapy targets educational impact; private therapy can go deeper and move faster. We coordinate with school teams so the two reinforce each other.
